History of the Bucks County Jail Roster

Bucks County has a long history of operating a jail. The original jail in Doylestown was completed in 1813 at a cost of about $38,000. Before that, the county prison was in Newtown. The 1813 jail was used for 70 years until a Grand Jury in 1882 declared it unfit. A new Bucks County Prison was completed in 1885 at a cost of $85,000, with an adjacent stable included. The wall around the prison was built in the 1930s as part of a Works Progress Administration project.

By 1980, the old prison was again outdated. County Commissioners approved a new facility, and the Bucks County Correctional Facility opened on June 18, 1985. This is the building still in use today. The facility was designed from the ground up with a direct supervision model. It was built to hold more inmates than the prior facility and to offer better programming and services. Over the decades, Bucks County has expanded services and inmate programming at this location.

Note: Historical jail records from the 19th century may be available through the Bucks County Historical Society or the Pennsylvania State Archives.
